Read classic books slowly and meet to discuss the scheduled reading along the way.
The Classics Reading Group will read the book in three parts and will meet to discuss each section.
Up next, we will go down a philosophy rabbit hole with three classics. Allow me to reveal them in reverse order. Back in March of 2020 we were looking forward to reading Plato’s Republic with the guidance of one of our readers, Carol, a professor emerita of Philosophy. It is time that we pick up where we left off with our plans to read Plato. As Carol will not be available until February, she recommended Machiavelli’s The Prince to tide us over. At 100 pages, The Prince is only long enough for one January meeting. As it happens, The Little Prince fits the bill for the first January meeting: it is a classic with philosophical themes, the title fits in perfectly, and it is “merely” a children’s book to start our year off gently.
January 11: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1943)
January 25: The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli (1532)
The Republic by Plato (c. 375 BC) Any copy will suffice as they are all numbered the same.
· February 8: Introduction & Book 1
· February 22: Books 2 to 5
· March 8: Books 6 to 7
· March 22: Books 8 to 10
This is a "hybrid" program that meets both in-person at the McClatchy Library and virtually on Zoom. To attend via Zoom, you must register for the codes.
