Learn about the transformation of Elk Grove from a 1850 stage-stop hotel to a bustling city, officially incorporated in 2000, with a rich agricultural and railroad heritage.
Join Elk Grove historian Louis Silveria as he explores the rich history of Elk Grove, which dates back to 1850 when it was just a stage-stop hotel. By 1876, this small farm town in the shadow of Sacramento had become a crossroads along the new railroad tracks. As the railroad era progressed, it brought significant changes to Elk Grove—transforming fields into orchards, vineyards, and eventually, residential developments. Elk Grove remained part of southern Sacramento County until citizens successfully sought cityhood, leading to its formal incorporation on July 1, 2000, with 72,665 residents and over 170,000 today.
