Building Confidence in the Kitchen: Alana Kysar

Alana Kysar will lead a virtual cooking demonstration, featuring recipes from her cookbook "Aloha Veggies: Veg-Forward Recipes Celebrating the Flavors of Hawai'i."
Prepare the ingredients below and cook along with Alana at home! During the program, Alana will discuss how she developed this recipe and teach kitchen skills to make the recipes in her cookbook more approachable.

June 3rd recipe ingredients: Black Lentil Burgers Loco Moco (Pg. 78)
Black Lentil Burgers
- 1/2 cup black lentils, rinsed*
- Kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more as needed
- 1/2 sweet onion, diced
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
- One 15-ounce can chickpeas drained (but not rinsed)
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Kewpie mayonnaise
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, plus more as needed
*Prepare lentils day before event.
For serving
- Brown gravy (Page 73)
- 4 cups cooked rice of choice
- 4 large eggs, cooked sunny-side up or over easy
- 1 green onion, thinly sliced, for garnish

About the author: Born and raised in Hawai’i, Alana Kysar grew up in a kitchen inspired by the local cuisine and her Japanese-American heritage. Cooking and sharing beautifully curated experiences with family and friends is her love language. After living in California for 10+ years, she returned to her island home of Maui at the beginning of 2022 with her husband. She is a cookbook author, recipe developer, and photographer working from her home studio in Kula, Maui.
