Read classic books slowly and meet to discuss the scheduled reading along the way.
The year 1816 is known as the "Year Without Summer" after the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia created a cloud that blocked out the sun in Europe. While vacationing in Geneva, Switzerland during that cold, dark year, 18 year-old Mary Shelley, her future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and their friend John Polidori had a competition to see who could write the best horror story. It was then that Frankenstein, or, the Modern Prometheus was born. Within two years it would be published and later would become one of the most well-known books of the Romantic genre.
The Classics Reading Group will read Frankenstein in two parts and will meet to discuss each section. Note the different chapter numbers for the 1818 and 1831 editions.
· October 26: 1818 edition, Letter 1 through Volume 2, Chapter 3/1831 edition, Letter 1 through end of Chapter 11
· November 9: 1818 edition, Volume 2, Chapter 4 through end of novel/1831 edition, Chapter 12 through end of novel
