Please join us in the Clunie Auditorium for Words Take Wing: Honoring Diversity in Children's Literature featuring author Mitali Perkins.
This annual celebration, held each February in partnership with UC Davis School of Education, gives students and community members the opportunity to hear about the personal journeys and creative processes of acclaimed authors and illustrators of diverse children’s literature whose stories about Native American heritage, Asian culture, African American culture, and Latino identity, among many others, allow them to explore a wide range of perspectives and world views.
Author Mitali Perkins (mitaliperkins.com) has written many books for young readers, including You Bring the Distant Near (nominated for a National Book Award) and Rickshaw Girl (adapted into a film by Sleeperwave Productions), all of which explore crossing different kinds of borders. Her goal is to make readers laugh or cry, preferably both, as long as their hearts are widening. She lives and writes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her newest work JUST MAKING: A GUIDE FOR COMPASSIONATE CREATIVES, is a nonfiction guide for adults who want to persevere in creativity, and will be coming May 5, 2025 from Broadleaf Books.
ASL interpretation will be provided.
